Why Do Kittens Sleep On Your Head?

New kitten owners figure out a lot of things about cats pretty quickly. However, some things that kittens do might not make sense. For example, many new kitten owners will wake up with their kitten curled up on top of their heads.

As kittens grow up, they tend to move away from their owner’s head and might sleep cuddled up elsewhere. Some cats move away from cuddling at night entirely.

Whether your kitten is currently sleeping on your head or used to, rest assured that their feelings for you are the same. This article explores why kittens sleep on your head and signs that your kitten loves you.

What Does it Mean When a Kitten Sleeps on Your Head?

A kitten could be sleeping on your head for a number of reasons:

  • Warmth. Your head emits warmth, and hair can help retain that heat. Kittens might be looking for the warmest spot to cuddle up to in the middle of the night, and your exposed head might be the perfect spot!
  • Safety. What’s the best way for a kitten to ensure they’re safe at night? Cuddling up against your head or face could ensure that any threats will wake you both, and that you’ll be there to protect your kitten.
  • Bonding. Your kitten might be cuddling up against your head at night because they love you! Bonding with your kitten happens over time, and cuddling with you at night is a sign that they’re getting close to you.

If your kitten sleeping on your head bothers you at night, you can always encourage them to sleep elsewhere. In many cases, kittens grow out of this phase and find somewhere else to sleep as they get older.

Keep in mind that sleeping against your head isn’t the only way to tell that a kitten is bonded with you. Your new kitten could love you a lot, but they might find a warm blanket or enclosed bed to be cozier for sleeping at night.

How to Tell if a Kitten is Imprinted on You

Aside from sleeping on your head, there are tons of ways to tell if a kitten is imprinted on you. Imprinting only happens with babies and means that your kitten has formed a close bond with you.

Here are other ways to tell if your kitten has imprinted on you.

Your kitten follows you around

Does your kitten follow you around like a little shadow? This is because they want to be around you! Following you from room to room is a pretty clear sign that they’ve bonded with you.

Your kitten is anxious when you leave and happy when you return

It’s hard to tell when your kitten is anxious, but destructive behavior when you’re gone could be a clear sign. If your kitten greets you at the door when you return home, then they’re happy to see you!

Your kitten seeks out your attention

From cuddling to playtime, kittens look for your attention in different ways. However, they don’t have to come to you whenever they want warmth or fun — instead, they’ve chosen you! This is a great sign that your kitten has imprinted on you.

Your kitten shows signs of affection

Licking, cuddling, and nuzzling are all clear signs of affection from a kitten. Any of these could be clues that your kitten has imprinted on you.
